light shone under the door from the hallway. a small child in her bed pulled the sheets up over her eyes to shield against the brightness. the light moved swiftly from one side to the other, as if a flashlight rolled by on the floor and when it passed the darkness seemed different than before. it was somehow more lonely and sad, like all the good in the world disappeared with the light. the child, noticing that the darkness had returned, let the covers fall past her face. she stared at the door for what seemed like forever, listening for any clue as to what the light had been. nothing. cautiously, she turned and hung her feet over the side
